Twenty Million Dollar Project
A petition to set up a “standing committee on strategy and growth” funded by a twenty million dollar “carve out” from World Service Funds was referred to the Judicial Council.
The decision spells out the ways the petition violated the constitution.
Unsaid was the implied critique of the denomination as not trying to grow. United Methodist News Service reported at the time the actual efforts of various agencies working on it.
Here is another prospective use of requests for rulings by the Council. The motion for this new committee was on the floor but had not been acted upon when the request came for its review before the Council. And the decision of the Council gave appropriate information that helped the General Conference make a reasonable and lawful decision about the petition.
